Takamine GS330S--Can't Go Wrong
Pontos Fortes: VALUE--great sound for the price (under $300); distinctive sound with solid cedar top; good workmanship; and good feel.
Pontos Fracos: neck a tad rough (not significant, will smooth out after a period of use); cedar top softer wood than spruce--easier to scratch.
I've been an owner for 2 days, but I've had chance to play it before as well. Unbelievable quality for the price. Top notch performer in it's price range. Unique appearance is a bonus.

Pontos Fortes: Sound, looks, lightweight

My review is a little different in that I'm a musician but not a guitar player - I got the instrument for sampling the sounds for midi. I wanted something with a really nice guitar sound but without having to spend a fortune. I spent some time listening to guitars - both my own piddling around and in the hands of decent players - at a major retailer, everything from the crappiest plywood POS to the most expensive models they had.
I see other reviews consistently say the same thing I concluded on my own - the GS330S stands out as having sound better than its price range. I've felt this way about two of them that I've heard from different sources, so assuming Takamine's QC is consistent, you should be happy with it. It also seems to maintain decent tuning throughout the fretboard. I imagine a tweaking by a luthier would make it even better. Obviously a pick guard would be a good option to add.
I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 only because I don't feel qualified to judge it against what are considered the finest guitars but I can say without reservation I really like the sound on its own merit.

I spent many hours researching sites for the "perfect" acoustic. Many things to consider; subjective reviews regarding tone quality, what is the guitar made of, where is it made, how well does it play, and value. What I found was that tone and the quality of the sound is quite subjective. Many prefer a mahogany back and sides for the sound. Others prefer rosewood. Some reviews will tell you one type of wood is better than another. Another feature to consider is a solid top..typically spruce (mine is cedar). After narrowing my choices down to several guitars which I thought were the best value given all of the above, I went to a local store to hear the difference. What I discovered is how the differences each wood type effect the sound. I decided on the Takamine GS330S because of the warm sound it produces. The cedar top I believe is what created this for me. A similar guitar with a spruce top had brighter highs but was not as warm a tone. Bottom line...you need to listen to several guitars before making a purchase. Even the most expensive guitar may not suit your listening. This makes buying a guitar site unseen over the net very difficult and could be a disappointment when it arrives. Good luck in your search for the right instrument.
