3 Star ReviewSony MicroVault 2GB Flash Drive -- typical Sony, stable, decent, ho-hum
Pontos Fortes: Typical Sony reliability, clean styling (if that matters to you)
Pontos Fracos: Slow transfer rate compared to others I've used.
Sumário: Sony delivers in typical Sony form with their MicroVault flash drive. It works as expected. Ho hum.

However, if Sony ever wants to capture a real share of this market, they're going to need to work on the product's transfer rate. In terribly unscientific experiementing, the Sony MicroVault was significantly slower than my SanDisk Cruzer Micro 2GB and Kingston Mini-Migo 2GB flash drives, both of which cost me less than the Sony.

3 Star ReviewFirst "Certified USB" design I've seen from Sony
Pontos Fortes: "Certified USB" compliance for compatibility, nice looking design
Pontos Fracos: Slow, poor positioning of activity indicator
Sumário: I picked one of these up during a recent sale. It's the first Sony USB flash drive I have tested, and, I believe, the first Sony USB flash drive to have a "Certified USB" logo. This is important, because it means Sony took the time and spent the money to submit this Micro Vault drive for compliance testing. Not many USB flash drive vendors bother to do this. Some earlier Sony drives do not display the "Certified USB" logo and are reported to have certain compatibility problems.

Size is about average at 2 5/8" x 5/8" x 5/16", a little shorter and thicker than the classic SanDisk Cruzer Mini drives. This makes it too thick to be stacked with another USB device. When both the Micro Vault and the intentionally thin SanDisk Cruzer Mini are plugged into typical motherboard twin or quad USB connectors, the two devices push each other apart, which can't be good for long-term reliability.

Like the new generation SanDisk Cruzer Micro, the Sony Micro Vault has a retractable USB connector. A slider switch on the side of the drive clicks into obvious detents at the fully extended and retracted positions. The activity LED is also on this slider switch, which is not ideal. If your PC is to your left and has a typical paired USB port stack in front, you won't be able to see the activity LED, because it will point away from you.

Performance-wise, the 2 GB Micro Vault is about average. I generally run two real world tests to gauge the speed of a USB drive.

First off, I copy a directory of CD cover scans consisting of 521 files in 24 folders totaling 66.3 MB from my hard drive to the USB flash drive.

The 2 GB MicroVault takes 63.25 seconds to do this, which is about average. By comparison, the Lexar 4 GB JumpDrive Lightning, which is the fastest USB drive out there, take about 9.5 seconds.

Second, I copy a 310 MB compressed CD ISO from my hard drive to the USB flash drive. The 2 GB Micro Vault does this in 151.85 seconds, which, again, is about average but well behind the JumpDrive Lightning's 15 seconds.

Note that I don't test USB flash drive read performance. Write performance is always the bottleneck, and I've found that write performance correlates pretty well with read performance, e.g. fast writing = fast reading. Also, these times are under Windows 2000 SP 4. Performance under Windows XP is comparable for larger files, but 3 to 4 times slower when copying the 500+ file folder.

Two additional items: The 2 GB MicroVault does not come with a lanyard but does have a loop for one. It also, comes with Micro Vault Virtual Expander, on the fly compression software that claims to increase capacity by a factor of 3, kind of like Stacker and DriveSpace from the MS-DOS days. I did not test Micro Vault Virtual Expander which, by all accounts, drastically degrades performance.

Pontos Fortes: Slick Design, good functionality, and the compression software gives you as much as 6GB of virtual space and Convenient
Pontos Fracos: A little slow compared with other USB flash drive. The compression software affects the speed in some conditions
Sumário: Slick Design, good functionality, and the compression software gives you as much as 6GB of virtual space and Convenient. But it is a little slow compared with other USB flash drive. Maybe it is beause the compression software affects the speed in some conditions. The retractable USB connector sometimes doesn't work so well. One needs to make sure the connector is pulled to the right place.

3 Star Reviewjust a regular flash drive
Pontos Fortes: brand name, swtich function
Pontos Fracos: crispy plastic
Sumário: The brand name makes the usb flash drive a little more attractive than other flash drive. The item looks like being made of metal. Only when you get the item in hand will you find that the item is made of cheap plastic. That is a disappointment of the purchase. On the other hand, the switch is a unique feature of the flash drive so that you can carry the flash drive more easily without having a sharp edge in a pocket.

Pontos Fortes: Great price for a very solid flash drive
Pontos Fracos: None
Sumário: The 2GB Micro Vault USB 2.0 Flash Drive is a great little flash drive for the $20 price tag. With tons of storage, the micro vault allows the users to store plenty of files for use with most up-to-date computer systems. It's compact shape and hidden USB plugs makes this flash drive one of the better models on the market. 2GBs of storage is enough for the casual computer user. I would definitely recommend this flash drive for anyone looking to upgrade to a large storage device.

Pontos Fortes: Small, good design, good price and have micro vault
Pontos Fracos: None
Sumário: Get it from circuit city for $17. Very good price for a 2GB USB flash drive. Small and the USB head is retractable. Speed is fast and reliable. Together with the micro vault build-in. It's virtually triple the storage size. Very satisfy with this product.

Pontos Fortes: Looks cool.
Pontos Fracos: USB connector is not covered.
Sumário: It's a nice drive. Looks cool and sliding design is convenient. But USB connector is not covered like with other non sliding USB drives which may cause problem - dust, crumbs may get stuck there.

3 Star ReviewPlastic?!
Pontos Fortes: size, collapsible design, very attractive
Pontos Fracos: plastic, no lanyard
Sumário: The drive itself is functional, there is no doubt about it. But it's feel is cheap plastic and I'm afraid to really put it through its paces, because I'm afraid it's going to crack or break into tiny pieces. If you can get Lexar or SanDisk for the same price, I'd go with one of those, because they are made more durably.

Pontos Fortes: Store a lot of file.
Pontos Fracos: I do see any weaknesses in this product.
Sumário: This is SONY band. It is cheap. I purchase it at Staples for $19.98. Orginal price is $44.00. Also, it is 2 GB Flash Drive. I do see any difference than other Flash Drive. So, if you see this price, you should buy it.

Pontos Fortes: Pop-up USB flash drive. 2GB storage space. Good budget price.
Pontos Fracos: Compression technology is slow.
Sumário: It's a pretty good USB flash drive. It has a compressor program inside, but it's a tad bit too slow for me to actually use it. Rather than a cap, the USB head can just pop out from its case to protect it from the environment. Pretty good altogether, I have to say. Very useful for transfering files and holding drivers.

Pontos Fortes: Small size, ease of use, amount of storage space.
Pontos Fracos: none.
Sumário: Overall a great little drive, compact, easy to use and holds tons of files. Out of the box this was very easy to use just plug in and go. I have used several storage drives and this one performs in the top.

Pontos Fortes: No cap, sufficient room for the price
Pontos Fracos: A little long
Sumário: This 2GB microvault is much faster out of the box than its 4gb big brother. There is no cap to lose, so that is a plus. However, compared to the Sandisk Cruzer, it is quite long. That's really the only thing I can think of to complain about. It's a great flash drive, especially if you can get it for under $20.

Pontos Fortes: great price; usb connector retracts; nice looking;
Pontos Fracos: no neck or carrying device for key ring; slower than other models
Sumário: well worth the money and vista capatible; not industrial strength, it looks like it will break easily if abused. the bigest issue is lack of keychain attachment. i would expect a company like sony to provide

Pontos Fortes: Retractable Large Space Capacity Nice Appearance
Pontos Fracos: No keychain
Sumário: Sony has come out with an excellent flash drive which contains both the comfort and appearance of a high-class electronic device. While it does require more attention to keep in place (without the keychain or other attachment), it offers protection by the sliding USB port. Within the flash drive, it also is able to compress data up to 3x its capacity to allow more space for the impressive 2.0 MicroVault.
