Alesis DM5KIT Electronic Drum Kit with DM5 Module

I am happy that the rack seems sturdy. The connectors and joints are plastic, but I think it will be ok for casual use and practice. I think it is a good starter kit at least... may work for some kind of band practice or casual gig, though I don't know if it could stand multiple teardowns. The same could probably be said for other more expensive kits I imagine. This is my first electric kit though and I feel like it is a good place to start and doesn't cost too much. One hint, though... I put the whole thing together before I realized the kit instructions were in the same bag with the DM5 brain instructions; I thought they just didn't give me any! That being said, it was intuitive enough to put together w/o instructions if you look at the picture on the box and place the pieces out. Once it was put together and plugged-in, I banged away and really didn't need to adjust anything (though I'll probably adjust the high-hat pedal a bit). It was hard for me to tell whether the kick-pad mounts from the middle bar or the bottom bar... I used the middle bar so it hangs down and that seems fine. I had to adjust the bass drum pedal with a hex-wrench (no instructions) but it wasn't too hard.

My kit is missing one cable for connecting from a pad to the brain so my ride cymbal is not working. I'm going to call Alesis and see how good their service department is... luckily if they aren't good, I could just get something working from Radio Shack since it is just a headphone jack to mini jack cable.

I'm psyched!! If you want to practice drums and can't get an acoustic set due to volume or space issues... and can't afford the more expensive electronic sets, then this is the best deal out there it seems. Lots of fun for $499!
