THE GOOD: Reproduces deep black levels; accurate color with superb saturation, properly handles 1080p/24 sources; uses less power than previous 1080p plasmas; extensive feature set with Yahoo widgets, network streaming and built-in content; solid connectivity with four HDMI and one PC input. THE BAD: Somewhat expensive; glitch in 1080p/24 mode causes picture setting change; frames red coloration not for everyone; no S-Video inputs. THE BOTTOM LINE: Samsungs PNB650 series of cant quite match the best plasmas on the market, but it comes close enough to offer a viable alternative.

But aesthetics is not all the Samsung PN50B650 offers – this HDTV also delivers superb picture quality with nearly flawless color accuracy. Shadow detail is excellent and black levels are very deep, though not as dark as Panasonic’s G10/G15 models. Experienced viewers will appreciate the vast collection of picture-adjustment settings for tweaking the picture to your liking, while novices will appreciate the intuitive and easy to use menu system. The PN50B650 also features very good video processing and the TV can properly handle 1080p/24 sources. This plasma TV also performs very well in brightly-lit rooms, which gives it an edge over the competition. Connectivity is solid with 4 HDMI inputs, 2 component inputs, a PC input, and a composite input, but it’s missing an S-video input. However, this shouldn’t be an issue for most buyers. There’s also an Ethernet port, which can be used for accessing interactive content via Yahoo Widgets and updating the TV’s firmware. As with any plasma, this HDTV is less efficient than comparable LCDs but more efficient than older plasma displays. Overall, the Samsung PN50B650 is an excellent plasma TV that should be at or near the top of your list.

The 2009 Plasma 6 Series is Samsungs update to their high-end line of Plasma displays that offer a 1080p resolution alongside extra features such as expanded Internet connectivity. As the successor to the 2008 Series 6 Plasmas, the 2009 models upgrade the Internet capabilities to the full Samsung Internet@TV with video streaming and Yahoo widgets, and uses a different filter that Samsung claims has a better ability to reduce glare. Furthermore, for both the updated 6 Series, and the new for 2009 flagship 8 Series, Samsung has made both lines more energy efficient to match the EPAs Energy Star 3.0 standards.
